Simple, distraction-free writing environment

A lightweight alternative to Microsoft Word — without all of the toolbars and other distractions.

FocusWriter is a simple, distraction-free writing environment. It utilizes a hide-away interface that you access by moving your mouse to the edges of the screen, allowing the program to have a familiar look and feel to it while still getting out of the way so that you can immerse yourself in your work. It’s available for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X, and has been translated into many different languages.

  1. Getting into the school, residency or fellowship program that you want isn’t just about grades or test scores. Numbers are important, as are things like leadership, volunteering and extra-curriculars. But admissions committees want to see beyond those things. They want to know who you are. As a person. As an aspiring doctor, or lawyer, or engineer, or Wall Street trader, or surgery resident. What it is that drives you. That intrigues you. That comforts you. That’s what the personal statement is for.

  2. FAIL.
By comparing it to MS Word, you imply that this program is a standin for it. But it’s not. It only supports TXT, basic RTF, and basic ODT. Unless you are a power user or geek, you probably store your MS files in doc or docx format, which this program can’t handle.
