Red Deer College, in Alberta, Canada was the target of a recent ransomware attack…
Luckily the individual who clicked on the malicious email, quickly knew something was off and contacted the campus IT department immediately. According to CBC News, the school was able to isolate the issue within five minutes and avoid catastrophe. Fortunate for Red Deer College, no data was lost.
Red Deer College is now the second reported ransomware attack on a Canadian college in the last 30 days. The first attack this year occurred in late May, where ransomware held the University of Calgary hostage. They struggled to regain access to their systems and ended up paying the ransom of $20,000 CAN. As of earlier this month, the school was still struggling to get their systems back to normal, even with the encryption keys provided by the hackers. Hey Kayla..
Thanks for sharing that link it was very useful to me. Here I found many answers.
Was is Petya Ransomware or any thing else. I have listen that many systems are getting infected by Petya Ransomware.
I didn’t find where they specified the form of ransomware, so I am uncertain if it was Petya or not. I know they have increased their attacking efforts by adding Mischa to their attacks as well. You can read more about Petya adding the Mischa component here: http://techtalk.pcpitstop.com/2016/05/16/petya-ransomware-adds-new-features/
