Ransomware Pushes Two Ohio Hospitals Offline

Ohio Hospitals Become Latest Ransomware Victims

Cyber criminals once again impacted patient care at two Ohio hospitals.  On Friday, November 23, 2018, Ohio Valley Medical Center and East Ohio Regional Hospital were infected with an unknown ransomware variant.  The malicious attack locked the medical facility’s networks, leaving them with no choice but to take their systems offline in an attempt to minimize the damages.

Karin Janiszewski, director of marketing and public relations for both facilities, stated no patient information has been breached as a result of the cyber attack.  She also reported their IT department is working “around the clock” to get systems back to full capacity.  It is unclear if they intend to pay the ransom demands.
Both Ohio hospitals are diverting emergency patients to other facilities, with the exceptions of walk-ins.
